Project Description

Bonded Child Labour and Their Education

Bonded child labor refers to the phenomenon of children working in conditions of servitude in order to pay off a debt. The debt that binds them to their employer is incurred not by the children themselves, but by their relatives or guardians-usually by a parent. Bonded labour system is a modern form of slavery, which combines feudal values, traditions and practices, with contemporary exploitative labour relations. Almost all South Asian societies bear the brunt of this, one way or the other. However it is more prevalent in India, Pakistan and Nepal.

Bonded child labour is a problem defined by the social, cultural and political histories of a particular community. This issue is complex, and the fight against it needs an integrated approach and multi-pronged strategy. Piece-meal works, which are in place now, are not going to improve the lives of those suffering. Interventions remain incomplete unless land, parents, employment, education, health and gen-der issues are tackled simultaneously. Reaching the bonded children in many communities where they mostly remain hidden by their workplaces and by their status in society is a big challenge. Helping them recognize their value and strength as persons, build dreams, and reach for these dreams with confidence is a huge task that demand focused attention.

Historical Background of Bounded Child Labour

Child labor issue emerged on the international landscape in early 90s and soon gathered enormous attention across the world. Pakistan was quick to respond to the challenges of child labour. In no time, clutch of policy initiatives, plans of action and legislative and administrative measures were put in place for the prevention withdrawal, rehabilitation and eventual elimination of child labour through formal and non-formal education. Lot has been done at the public / private sector in the past and much more is expected in future. It goes without saying that the menace of child labor still exists in all its forms shapes and a matter of serious concern for all concerned. We believe that collective response and a consistent approach is the only way out to combat child labour in Pakistan.

Causes of Child Labor in Developing Countries

Child labour is the product of poverty, overpopulation, illiteracy, inadequacy of the education system, and lack of awareness, deepening rural- urban economic divide and income inequalities. In developing countries, it is a centuries old problem, therefore it needs to be addressed with innovate and workable strategies for its long-term solution.
